Crafts with household supplies you can actually find
Some weeks the cupboard is enough. Some weeks the list is a bottle of glue. This page splits those weeks honestly, so you are not promised a junk-drawer miracle and then sent to three stores.
Usually already home
Start here before you put on shoes. If two or three of these are in the house, you can make tonight.
- Printer paper, junk mail, brown grocery bags, or the back of a school flyer
- Paper plates leftover from a birthday or picnic
- Toilet-paper tubes or a paper-towel tube (same craft, different length)
- A shipping box, a cereal box, or the sleeve from crackers
- Tape, a pencil, crayons, washable markers
- A clean jar, clothespins, rubber bands, string from a bakery box
- Leaves, a stick, a pinecone — if you can name the plant and you were allowed to pick it up
The junk drawer is not a craft store. It is often a museum of dried-out glue. If the stick is a brick, that is a shop, not a character flaw.
One drugstore or grocery run
These are the items that turn “we have paper” into a finish you can hang. Buy them once; they cover a month of weeknights.
- White school glue or a glue stick — glue stick is cleaner; white glue holds tubes and cardboard
- Child scissors for the kid; you still cut eye holes, slits, and anything stubborn
- A pack of construction paper or a few sheets of card stock
- Washable paint if you want color that is not a crayon
- Twine or baker’s string for hanging
- Air-dry clay when you want a piece that lives on a nightstand, not only on the fridge
You do not need a specialty aisle. Grocery, drugstore, and the shipping box in the hall cover almost every project on this page. Amazon is a convenience when you already know the item — not a scavenger hunt, and not a promise that every listing is in stock.
Tonight, no shop
Paper chains or snowflakes. A plate sun. Tube binoculars. A leaf rubbing if you walked this afternoon.
After one stop
Paper star garland with heavyweight paper. A pinch bowl. A cardboard frame with glue that actually sticks.
Time, who is at the table, adult jobs
A weeknight make should fit in about thirty minutes including the clearing of the table. Adult prep — finding the box, cutting a window, mixing paint — can start while dinner is still on. A Saturday is for the appliance box and for clay that needs to sit overnight.
Crafty is parent-guided. Kids tear, color, glue, and press. You handle scissors on tight cuts, box cutters, knives, ovens, glass, and hot glue. If a toddler is at the table, skip beads, brads, and anything that fits in a nose.

Paper chain doorway
Cut strips from printer paper, junk mail, or a grocery bag. Loop, fasten, repeat until the chain spans a doorway. Construction paper is nicer; it is not required. Paper plate sun
Color the plate. Glue short paper strips around the rim for rays, or cut slits in the rim yourself and let a child fold them out. Hang it with a hole punch and string. More plate work is on paper plate crafts.
Tube binoculars
Tape two toilet-paper tubes side by side. Wrap them in paper if you want. Punch holes and tie a neck strap. Paper-towel tubes cut in half are the same craft. Keep the make overnight and photograph it; it does not have to go out with Thursday recycling. See toilet paper roll crafts.
Cereal-box picture frame
Flatten the box. Draw a window. You cut it. The child covers the border with paper scraps, crayon, or dried beans you were going to cook anyway. Slip a drawing or a printed snapshot behind the window. The longer version is how to make a cardboard picture frame.
Leaf rubbing, then the fridge

Jar of lids, painted
If you have paint, a child can coat jar lids and stack them as a color study. You wash the jar. Use it on the table for pencils. If you do not have paint, skip this and make the chain. Household does not mean inventing a second project from wishful thinking.
Substitutions that do not wreck the make
- No construction paper: printer paper, grocery bags, magazines for collage
- No glue: tape for chains and tubes; a stapler if you keep fingers clear
- No plates: a circle cut from a cereal box, adult scissors
- No tubes: roll printer paper around a marker, tape the seam, slide the marker out
- No box: a paper bag becomes a puppet; it will not become a castle
- No clay: that project waits. Salt dough is a different recipe and a different dry. Do not pretend they are the same.
