Toilet paper roll crafts worth keeping overnight
Upcycle, in the practical sense: a tube becomes binoculars or a napkin ring, you take a picture, and it does not have to prove a point on trash night. Paper-towel tubes are a fine substitute. You cut the slits.
What you need
- Empty toilet-paper tubes, or paper-towel tubes cut to length
- Tape — the honest fastener. White glue works; it is slower
- Scrap paper, crayons, or a bit of paint
- String or yarn for a strap or for hanging
- A hole punch if you have one
- Optional: a marble and extra tubes for a run; extra cardboard from a box
Hygiene, briefly: use a clean, dry roll you just finished. If that still bothers you, paper-towel tubes never lived beside a toilet. Do not retrieve tubes from a used bin and call it a craft.

Time and adult jobs
Most tube crafts fit a weeknight. Castle walls and marble runs eat a Saturday morning and more tubes than you think; count before you promise a fortress.
Adult jobs: cutting slits for wings, cutting paper-towel tubes to size, notching stampers, anything with a knife. Kids wrap, tape, color, and decide if it is an owl or a robot. Hot glue will hold a tube to a box faster than white glue — you run that gun, not a preschooler.
Six tube crafts
Binoculars
Tape two toilet-paper tubes side by side. Wrap in paper if you want them to match. Punch holes near the outer edges and tie a neck strap. Plastic wrap over the ends is optional and yours to cut and tape. They do not magnify. They do give a walk around the block a job. Keep them on a hook overnight. That is the whole point of this page.
Owl (or any creature)
Press the top of the tube flat and cut two shallow notches so the rim becomes ear tufts — you do that. The child draws eyes and a beak, or glues paper circles. Standing on a windowsill until morning is enough of a life. If it goes in the recycling tomorrow, the photograph still exists.
Napkin rings
Cut a tube into one-inch rings. Kids color or wrap them with yarn. Slide over a napkin. This is the tube craft that earns a place at the table instead of the guilt pile. Make six if you are feeding six. Paper-towel tubes give you more rings per tube.
Castle turrets
Stand tubes on a cereal-box plaza. Tape them down. Cut crenellations in the rims if you have patience — adult scissors. A paper-towel tube is a tower; a toilet-paper tube is a turret. Combine with the shipping box if Saturday got ambitious. This is mixed-age work: tearing flags, taping, you doing structure.
Marble run segment
Cut tubes in half lengthwise (you) to make troughs, or leave them whole as tunnels. Tape to a cardboard backer or, carefully, to a wall you do not mind. Test with one marble. This fails if the pitch is wrong; that is engineering, not a moral. Stop at one working drop. A whole-wall run is a different afternoon.
Stampers
Cut V-shapes or squares in one end of a tube. Dip in a thin plate of paint. Stamp circles and gears onto paper. Wash the tube or accept that it is done. Good for a preschool table if you cap the paint and keep clothes you like off the chair.
If you have a bottle instead
Tubes are cardboard. Glass is a different upcycle, and you handle the bottle. The gentler household version is how to wrap a recycled bottle — yarn or paper, no wiring. A wired lamp can live in the app as a harder make. Do not mix those instructions.
